Weather Service Warns of Heat Illness Risk Under Carolinas Heat Advisory

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, the National Weather Service office in Wilmington, North Carolina, said in a heat advisory covering parts of both Carolinas on Friday, Aug. 15, 2026, as reported by wwqq101.com and wgni.com.
The advisory takes effect at 11 a.m. EDT and runs until 8 p.m. EDT, according to the reports, which said heat index values up to 110 are expected, with locally higher heat indices possible for a brief period.
The listed areas are Robeson, Bladen, Columbus, Inland Pender, Coastal Pender, Inland New Hanover, Coastal New Hanover, Inland Brunswick and Coastal Brunswick, along with Marlboro, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion, Williamsburg, Coastal Horry, Inland Georgetown, Coastal Georgetown, Central Horry and Northern Horry.
The Weather Service advised drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun and checking up on relatives and neighbors. It said people outside should take extra precautions, wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing, and try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening, and should take action when they see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments, the advisory said. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. "Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1," the advisory said.
