U.S. Extradites Alleged Tren de Aragua Leader to Chile on Kidnapping and Extortion Charges
The United States has extradited Rafael Enrique Gamez Salas, 40, to Chile, where he faces charges including one count of criminal association, two counts of extortion, two counts of unjustified firearm discharge, one count of kidnapping resulting in homicide, and one count of kidnapping for extortion, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). The charges were reported by justice.gov. The case is at the charging stage and has not been resolved; Gamez Salas is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Chile accuses Gamez Salas of directing multiple extortions and kidnappings on behalf of the Tren de Aragua (TdA), including the February 2024 kidnapping and murder of a former Venezuelan military officer, and of playing a leading role in an April 2024 armed confrontation that killed a Chilean police officer, according to the DOJ. These are allegations and have not been proven in court.
The extradition was handled by the U.S. Marshals Service, and the case was filed in the Central District of California, the DOJ reported. The proceeding is at the charging stage; no trial has been held and no verdict has been reached.
