Four Family Members Die in Plane Crash in Bahamas
Four people died when a Piper PA-34 crashed in waters off Red Bays, North Andros, Bahamas, on September 7, according to bnonews.com. Air traffic control lost contact with the aircraft about 13 miles west of Andros Island, and police received a report at about 2:20 p.m. that it may have gone down in the area. The crash occurred during cruise, and the aircraft was a five-seat aircraft.
The victims were identified as pilot Mario Lamar Sr., 80, his wife Lili Lamar, 79, and their grandchildren Sofi Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22. The family said Mario Lamar had more than 40 years of flying experience. The family said the search and recovery effort was carried out alongside family members and civilians who answered its call for help, and that they are working with the U.S. Coast Guard to bring their loved ones home.
The aircraft, registered N212ML, is a Piper PA-34-200T twin-engine piston landplane, according to aircraft registry records. Registry records list the registered owner as Seneca Aviation Inc.; the owner of record is not necessarily the operator, the pilot, or otherwise connected to the flight. The NTSB database, which begins in 2008, lists 36 other cases involving the Piper PA-34-200T, of which 7 involved a fatality; that record says nothing about the cause of this accident.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating. The cause of the crash has not been determined.
