Michigan State Police identify suspect after shootings at Missaukee County home; five dead
Michigan State Police said five people were killed and one person was injured in shootings at a home in Missaukee County, Michigan, on Friday, Aug. 14, 2026. The figures police gave as of Friday were 5 killed and 1 injured.
Troopers responded to a property in Missaukee County at around 11:40 a.m. on a report that someone had been shot, Michigan State Police said. Officers who responded just before noon found three people dead and another person in critical condition, according to state police. Up North Live, citing state police, reported that three dead people were found at a home in Missaukee County shortly before noon. One account on the record has Chad Hickman, 39, shooting three people dead at a home on LaChance Road in Lake Township on Friday morning before fleeing the scene; no source is named for that account.
Officials described the location at the county level — a home in Missaukee County. The city on the record is Lake Township, Michigan.
Police identified the suspect as Chad Hickman, 39; that identification came from police, specifically Michigan State Police. The suspect is dead. Earlier, police warned that Hickman was armed and dangerous and told community members not to approach him. The situation is no longer active. No cause or motive has been stated.
Michigan State Police, the responding agency, carried out an extensive, large-scale search around two homes and a wooded area near Whitlock Lake for Hickman. His vehicle was found in the wooded area near Whitlock Lake.
"We remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as new information becomes available," Michigan State Police Lt. Ashley Miller said, describing the situation as "heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved." Miller, a public information officer for the department, also said: "Not only is this difficult for our investigators and our troopers, but it's very hard for this community. You know, this type of loss is tragic." She said investigators were "going to conduct a thorough investigation, and we want to make sure to keep our community members up to date on our current situation and what we're discovering throughout this process."
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said her thoughts were "with the victims, their families, and the Missaukee community." Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said, "As we await more details, my prayers are with the family and loved ones of the victims and the entire Northern Michigan community." State Rep. Ken Borton asked people to "join me in praying for our Northern Michigan community tonight after the unspeakable acts of violence we saw unfold today," and to "especially send prayers for the six families who lost a loved one today and pray that an additional person, currently fighting for their life, will pull through and make a full recovery."
Borton's reference to six families differs from the toll of 5 killed that Michigan State Police gave as of Friday. The initial account from state police also described three people dead and one in critical condition at the scene, fewer than the 5 killed and 1 injured police later stated.

How we work
This site models an investigative reporter rather than a wire desk. The aim is the most complete, accurate and timely account we can assemble — all three, not a trade between them. Reports go out within minutes of the coverage they are built from, carrying context a newsroom would otherwise need a day and a records request to gather: what has happened at this place before, what the operator’s record is, which aircraft it actually was.
Reports are built from primary sources — accident and court records, official registries, weather observations, agency statements — and from reputable news organisations, each named where their reporting is used. Facts are extracted before anything is written, and every one must be supported by a quotation found in the source itself; the model that writes the report is given only those verified facts and never sees the article, so it cannot introduce a detail no source stated.
Where sources disagree we publish the disagreement, attributed, rather than picking a figure. Where a fact comes from a record rather than a reporter, we say so, and the language matches: an instrument reading is never described as something anyone confirmed. Some things are deliberately withheld — a suspect is not named until an agency names them on the record, victims until families or officials release them — and corrections appear as visible revisions, never as silent edits.
None of that makes a report true. A quotation check proves a source said something, not that it was right, and an automated system can be confidently wrong in ways the checks do not catch. If something here is wrong, the feedback above is how it gets found. The full methodology, including what we refuse to publish.
