Police name suspect in Twin Falls In-N-Out Burger shooting that killed three
Law enforcement has identified the gunman in the August 1 shooting at an In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho, as Chad Williams, 24. The Daily Mail attributed the identification to the Twin Falls Police Department; ABC News, the Mankato Free Press, Arab News and The Epoch Times attributed it to police and authorities generally. Police said the attack, which took place on the Saturday afternoon, ended when the gunman shot and killed himself; the Spokesman-Review and TMZ reported that he died by suicide and KYMA reported that he took his own life. Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said, "At this time, we have no other reason to believe that any other person was involved."
The three people killed were named by authorities on Tuesday, August 4: Ashley Garibay, 23, of Stockton, California, an In-N-Out employee who worked on a team training new staff; Dale Schultz, 66, of Salt Lake City; and Christopher Claunch, 59, of Hagerman, Idaho, an employee at Renaissance Ranch Recovery Center. Garibay and Claunch were also identified by loved ones — Garibay by her mother, Sabrina Garibay, and Claunch by his sister, Kimberly Castaneda, who spoke to the New York Times.
The Spokesman-Review and the Daily Mail reported seven people injured. The Spokesman-Review, ABC News, the Mankato Free Press and The Epoch Times attributed the count of three killed to Twin Falls city and county officials and the injury conditions to Chief Hicks; the Daily Mail attributed the injured count to the police department and noted the In-N-Out president said an employee was among the three killed; Arab News attributed the identifications to authorities, and KYMA attributed the figures to Chief Hicks. Hicks said: "We believe that 10 people received gunshot wounds in this incident, with three of those people losing their lives." As of Sunday, Hicks said, two of the seven injured had been treated and released, three were in stable condition and two were critically injured.
The restaurant had opened in late July as part of the chain's Idaho expansion — its first Magic Valley location opened Friday, July 24, according to KMVT 11, as cited in the reporting — and customers were waiting inside and in the drive-thru line. The police chief said an off-duty state trooper and a civilian, identified as 35-year-old Jordan Salinas, opened fire at the gunman. "We want to take a moment and commend the actions of the off-duty officer and the citizen and their heroic action to stop this incident," Hicks said. "We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties." Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies have responded.
City spokesperson Josh Palmer said: "Each person lost was a valued member of our community or guests of our community, and we recognize the profound pain this incident has caused across Twin Falls and beyond," adding that "additional information will be released when appropriate and when doing so will not compromise the integrity of the investigation or the privacy of those impacted." Police and partner groups opened a center where those affected can get support and request or collect personal items left at the scene; the Spokesman-Review reported it was set up at Sawtooth Elementary School, 1771 Stadium Blvd. in Twin Falls, open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on August 4 and 5. Hundreds of community members gathered at a Twin Falls park for a vigil on Tuesday night.

Three people were killed and seven others injured in a shooting at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Saturday afternoon, Aug. 1, 2026. The three people killed were named on Tuesday, Aug. 4, as Ashley Garibay, 23, of Stockton, California, an In-N-Out employee who worked on a team training new workers; Dale Schultz, 66, of Salt Lake City; and Christopher Claunch, 59, of Hagerman, Idaho, an employee at Renaissance Ranch Recovery Center. The Spokesman-Review reported the chain opened its first Magic Valley location on Friday, July 24, and that one worker was helping train new employees there. KYMA and TMZ reported that customers and employees were present, with one employee working the drive-thru.
Police said the attack ended when the man identified by police as the gunman, Chad Williams, 24, shot and killed himself; the Spokesman-Review and TMZ described it as death by suicide and KYMA reported he took his own life. Chief Hicks said an off-duty state trooper and a civilian, identified by the police chief as 35-year-old Jordan Salinas, opened fire at the gunman. "We want to take a moment and commend the actions of the off-duty officer and the citizen and their heroic action to stop this incident," Hicks said. "We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties." Hicks also said: "At this time, we have no other reason to believe that any other person was involved." A motive has not been established. Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies responded, and the incident is no longer active.
Twin Falls city spokesperson Josh Palmer said: "We extend our deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, friends, coworkers and community members grieving this unimaginable loss. Each person lost was a valued member of our community or guests of our community, and we recognize the profound pain this incident has caused across Twin Falls and beyond." Palmer added that "additional information will be released when appropriate and when doing so will not compromise the integrity of the investigation or the privacy of those impacted." Hicks said the department's "primary concern is providing support, resources, and timely information to the 10 immediate families directly affected by this tragic incident." The Spokesman-Review reported that Twin Falls Police and partner groups established a family assistance center at Sawtooth Elementary School, 1771 Stadium Blvd. in Twin Falls, open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 4-5; Arab News, ABC News, The Epoch Times and the Mankato Free Press reported that police opened a center where those affected can get support and request or collect personal items left at the scene.

How we work
This site models an investigative reporter rather than a wire desk. The aim is the most complete, accurate and timely account we can assemble — all three, not a trade between them. Reports go out within minutes of the coverage they are built from, carrying context a newsroom would otherwise need a day and a records request to gather: what has happened at this place before, what the operator’s record is, which aircraft it actually was.
Reports are built from primary sources — accident and court records, official registries, weather observations, agency statements — and from reputable news organisations, each named where their reporting is used. Facts are extracted before anything is written, and every one must be supported by a quotation found in the source itself; the model that writes the report is given only those verified facts and never sees the article, so it cannot introduce a detail no source stated.
Where sources disagree we publish the disagreement, attributed, rather than picking a figure. Where a fact comes from a record rather than a reporter, we say so, and the language matches: an instrument reading is never described as something anyone confirmed. Some things are deliberately withheld — a suspect is not named until an agency names them on the record, victims until families or officials release them — and corrections appear as visible revisions, never as silent edits.
None of that makes a report true. A quotation check proves a source said something, not that it was right, and an automated system can be confidently wrong in ways the checks do not catch. If something here is wrong, the feedback above is how it gets found. The full methodology, including what we refuse to publish.
