Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for Barnstable MA, Dukes MA, Nantucket MA
The National Weather Service Boston has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for Barnstable MA, Dukes MA, and Nantucket MA, effective from 5 PM to 11 PM EDT on September 5, 2026. The advisory warns of up to one half foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, with water levels reaching 2.9 to 11.4 feet Mean Lower Low Water. Roads remain passable, but low-lying areas near Nantucket Harbor, including Easy Street, may experience shallow flooding less than one foot deep.
A High Rip Current Risk is also in effect from late tonight through Sunday evening. Dangerous rip currents are expected, and officials advise swimming near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, and do not swim against the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
Residents in Barnstable MA, Dukes MA, and Nantucket MA are advised to allow extra time if travel is required, as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth, and take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.

The National Weather Service Boston has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory and a High Rip Current Risk for Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket counties in Massachusetts, effective Saturday, September 5, 2026. The advisory warns that low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, including roads near Nantucket Harbor such as Easy Street, may experience pockets of shallow flooding less than one foot deep. The advisory is in effect from 5 PM to 11 PM EDT Saturday, with up to half a foot of inundation above ground level expected.
The High Rip Current Risk is in effect from late Saturday night through Sunday evening. The Weather Service warns that rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Officials advise swimming near a lifeguard and, if caught in a rip current, to relax and float rather than swim against the current. They also caution against driving around barricades or through water of unknown depth.

Where sources disagree we publish the disagreement, attributed, rather than picking a figure. Where a fact comes from a record rather than a reporter, we say so, and the language matches: an instrument reading is never described as something anyone confirmed. Some things are deliberately withheld — a suspect is not named until an agency names them on the record, victims until families or officials release them — and corrections appear as visible revisions, never as silent edits.
