Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Central Illinois Until Friday Evening
The National Weather Service in Lincoln, Illinois, has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for portions of central, east central, southeast, and west central Illinois, effective from 11:14 a.m. CDT Wednesday, September 2, 2026, until 7 p.m. CDT Friday, September 4, 2026.
The warning covers 35 counties, including Knox, Stark, Peoria, Marshall, Woodford, Fulton, Tazewell, McLean, Schuyler, Mason, Logan, De Witt, Piatt, Champaign, Vermilion, Cass, Menard, Scott, Morgan, Sangamon, Christian, Macon, Moultrie, Douglas, Coles, Edgar, Shelby, Cumberland, Clark, Effingham, Jasper, Crawford, Clay, Richland, and Lawrence. Cities affected include Peoria, Champaign, Decatur, Danville, Effingham, and others.
Dangerously hot conditions are expected with heat index values up to around 105 degrees. Overnight lows in the mid 70s will provide minimal relief. The National Weather Service warns that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.
Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors.

Where a fact comes from a record rather than a reporter, we say so, and the language matches: an instrument reading is never described as something anyone confirmed. Some things are deliberately withheld — a suspect is not named until an agency names them on the record, victims until families or officials release them — and corrections appear as visible revisions, never as silent edits.
