Flood Warning Extended for Walnut Creek at Des Moines 63rd St Until 4 PM
The National Weather Service Des Moines IA has extended the flood warning for Walnut Creek at Des Moines 63rd St, or from 1 1/3 miles upstream of North Walnut Creek to the Raccoon River. The warning now runs until 4:00 PM today, September 9, 2026, later than originally issued.
Minor flooding is forecast. At 13.0 feet, Walnut Hill Dr is closed, and lowland flooding occurs along the east river bank downstream of 63rd St. At 14.0 feet, N Valley Dr is closed, and water affects Hoak Rd between Center St as well as the levee affecting several businesses.
The warning was issued at 1:29 AM today. The National Weather Service advises: "Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles." For the latest stream observations and forecasts, refer to weather.gov/desmoines/water.

Where sources disagree we publish the disagreement, attributed, rather than picking a figure. Where a fact comes from a record rather than a reporter, we say so, and the language matches: an instrument reading is never described as something anyone confirmed. Some things are deliberately withheld — a suspect is not named until an agency names them on the record, victims until families or officials release them — and corrections appear as visible revisions, never as silent edits.
None of that makes a report true. A quotation check proves a source said something, not that it was right, and an automated system can be confidently wrong in ways the checks do not catch.
