National Weather Service Issues Heat Advisory for Eastern North Carolina
The National Weather Service Newport has issued an official Heat Advisory for all of eastern North Carolina on Monday, August 17, 2026. The advisory begins at 11:00 AM EDT and expires at 8:00 PM EDT. This is a developing situation.
According to official documentation from the National Weather Service Newport, heat index values up to 110 are expected. The advisory covers 21 zones across eastern North Carolina, including Martin, Pitt, Washington, Tyrrell, Mainland Dare, Greene, Beaufort, Mainland Hyde, Duplin, Lenoir, Jones, Pamlico, Northern Craven, Southern Craven, West Carteret, East Carteret, Inland Onslow, Coastal Onslow, Northern Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island, and Hatteras Island. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.
Official guidance advises people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, and official instructions state to call 9 1 1.
