The National Weather Service Melbourne FL has issued a Rip Current Statement for Coastal Volusia, Mainland Northern Brevard, and Northern Brevard Barrier Islands, in effect from 2:00 AM to 8:00 PM EDT on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The statement warns of dangerous rip currents, which are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, occurring most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar and near structures such as jetties and piers.
According to the Weather Service, rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Entering the surf is strongly discouraged. If caught in a rip current, officials advise relaxing and floating, not swimming against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline; if unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags, and signs.
